Supplement Options When on Medications
Many medications can cause changes in the levels of nutrients important for good health. The following is a list of conditions, common drugs and appropriate supplementation to help avoid nutrient depletion. This information is for educational purposes only. This information should not be used to diagnose or treat any conditions. Always contact your naturopathic physician before making any changes in your supplementation regime.
Heartburn

Aluminum Hydroxide (Antacids)
Supplement with:
Folic Acid: Take at a different time than your antacids.
Antacids decrease the absorption of folic acid. In severe cases of deficiency, lack of folic acid can lead to tiredness, weakness, clumsiness, unsteady gait, memory loss, and irritability.
Phosphorus: Take at a different time than your antacids.
Antacids decrease the levels of phosphorus in your body. Phosphorus is indicated more for those with kidney dysfunction and/or are taking antacids for the long term. Improper dosage of phosphorus can be very dangerous to your health. You must talk to your naturopathic doctor to discover what is the right dosage for you.
Avoid:
Citrates (Magnesium Citrate, Calcium Citrate, Potassium Citrate etc.)
Citrates can increase the absorption of aluminum found in some antacids. High levels of aluminum have been associated with kidney damage and potential nerve damage.
Food sources:
Citrates are found in citrus fruits such as oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruit and some berries.
High Blood Pressure

Beta Blockers (Acebutolol)
Avoid:
Potassium:
Potassium levels are increased by beta-blockers. High levels of potassium can lead to weakness, abnormal heart rate and slow heart rate.
Foods Sources:
Bananas
